Excellence – going beyond the ordinary, doing something that is unusually good, achieving a new level of awesomeness. These are only a few ways to define the term. But what beyond that?
The term holds promise, and it hides in itself a lifestyle choice. While the phrase is bounced around in every work environment, embracing it is another matter. So, what does embracing excellence mean?
Embracing excellence means more than putting up posters explaining what it means.
Embracing excellence means more than stating the terms in the values of the organization.
Embracing excellence means more than telling someone to BE excellent.
Embracing excellence means choosing a lifestyle.
Embracing excellence means adapting self-improvement as the core focus of your life.
Embracing excellence means growing, evolving, and moving a step further than yesterday.
Once determined to adopt the lifestyle, there comes the matter of execution. Executing to perform better, to grow, and to learn. Learning is crucial to self-growth, and self-growth leads you towards excellence. But then, learning? Won’t that be an added to-do in everyday tasks? Not really…
There are simple steps to include the pursuit of awesomeness in your everyday routine. Like:
- Identify what you struggle with, and see who does it better. Now what is it they do and you don’t? Learn from them.
- Go over what you did in the last week. How could you have done it better? Or more efficiently? Learn from yourself.
- Learn. Explore. Ensure you are adding value to your skills on a regular basis! Learn from new sources.
Learn in tidbits, take baby steps, and go back to review what you learnt. Make notes, and implement it. Also, take time every month to evaluate how you have improved, and reward yourself. After all, positive reinforcement never hurt anyone!
